Peering at Kabunian’s Landscapes by Mr. S

Updated: Jul 11, 2024

Exhibition Date: 4 - 27 April, 2024

Step into the ethereal landscapes of Mr. S.'s latest exhibition, where the enigmatic concept of "kabunian" serves as both muse and guiding force. In this captivating collection, Mr. S. offers a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of kabunian, evoking its dual essence as both deity and sacred place. Drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines, particularly the Igorot land nestled amongst the clouds within the mountain province, the artist delves deep into the layers of meaning encapsulated by "kabunian". Through a polytheistic lens, kabunian emerges not only as a physical locale but also as a divine presence to whom prayers are offered—be they directed towards ancestors, spirits, or the elemental forces that shape the landscape.

Kate Contemporary proudly presents "Clusters" by Mr. S., inviting patrons to immerse themselves in the profound beauty of kabunian's landscapes. At the heart of Mr. S.'s exploration lies an intricate interplay between the act of praying and the act of

peering—a delicate balance between reverence and curiosity. With each stroke of the brush, viewers are invited to peer into the artist's inner sanctum, where the genesis of this profound collection unfolds. Here, in the sacred space where imagination meets spirituality, Mr. S. invites us to ponder the complexities of existence and our place within the paradigm of kabunian. Through his artistry, he offers not merely a visual feast for the senses but a soul-stirring journey that beckons us to contemplate the divine mysteries that dwell within and beyond.
