Kate Contemporary presents the works of Quiban, Crystal Tranquilino, and Margarita Ramirez in the group exhibition “Can You Feel What I see?”. Featuring a variety of landscape, still life and abstract art, the three artists’ works invite viewers to a degree of sensibility that goes beyond perception to one of immersion and appreciation.
Quiban is a Filipino architect based in Singapore known for his impressionist renditions and skillful mastery of colors. A self-taught mood landscapist, Quiban’s applications of texture in this collection draw viewers deep into his vision of nature and life. Crystal’s still-life art offers viewers a distinct glimpse into her approach and view of her surroundings. Through deeply evocative works, Crystal’s works elicit diverse interpretations that surpass conventional perspectives. Trained in painting since the age of 11, and currently a student at the Academia de arte Taller del Prado, Margarita’s relationship with painting reflects the parallelism between concept and the artist as well as the artist as subject. Seeing her art as a setting for self-discovery, healing, and freedom, her abstract paintings embolden the viewer to feel what the artist herself experiences in them.
The show reaffirms art’s role in promoting dialogue not only between viewers and subjects but also between artists and viewers. Perceiving the artist’s relationship with their art presupposes an openness to a story or an experience, and this in itself is a moment of empathy.
